Hiram Revels
Born in 1827, Hiram Rhodes Revels spent most of his younger years involved in his local Methodist church in Baltimore, where he was ordained as a minister. After the Emancipation Proclamation in '63, Revels went to great lengths in helping to recruit two all black regiments in Maryland. During the war itself, he served as chaplain for the regiments he had created. After the war, Revels was elected to the United States Senate. This was the first instance in which a black man served at the post, and what's more, he was the senator for the state of Mississippi.
