The Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau was a government agency established in 1865. The original goals of the establishment was to help those in war stricken areas of America, help freed blacks find jobs, and process crimes concerning blacks, among other things. The Bureau was originally supposed to be active for only a year, but legislation passed to continue the organization indefinitely. Until its discontinuation in 1869, The Freedmen's Bureau was one of the driving forces behind the Reconstruction.
