Copperheads
Note: This Copperhead snake has no affiliation with the Copperhead political faction and does not condone the actions or opinions of said group.
The Copperheads were a political group in the North who opposed the Civil War. They called for an immediate peace settlement with the Confederacy upon the outbreak of the war. Clement Vallandigham was one of the most famous Copperheads. They often blamed abolitionists for the war and tried to persuade Union soldiers to desert, and sometimes met with Confederate officials. Because of these actions, many members were accused of treason. Clement Vallandigham was actually deported to the South, where he tried to advocate for military action and the formation of a Northern Confederacy based in Ohio. The philosophies of the Copperheads often represented Jacksonian Democracy. Some argue that their actions severely crippled the Union, while others believe they had little significance in the larger picture.
